Mysticism & Metatron

Geometries of Light

It has been said that the language of the Angels is Geometries of ‘Light’, or in more modern terminology ‘Electromagnetic Radiation’. If this is ‘true’ then I have no doubt that the letters of their alphabet will include many of the forms that we assosicate with Sacred Geometry.

An obvious starting point for exploring the mysticism of Sacred Geometry is the design traditionally known as Metatron’s Cube. It is widely noted that the forms of the 3D Platonic solids can be found in the lines of Metatron’s Cube. I have written much elsewhere on this site about the 3D and 4D equivalents of this pattern.
But inevitably this leads to the questions – Who is Metatron and why is this design called his Cube??

Who IS Metatron ?

According to Hebraic mysticism, Metatron is the highest of the Archangels, the scribe of God who sits before the throne and gazes upon Gods naked face.
He is associated with the 4 Archangels of the elements and directions Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, and Uriel – and in this sense he is the angel of Spirit.

Metatron seems to be made up of two Greek words, after and throne, μετὰ θρóνος (meta thronos), taken together as “one who serves behind the throne” or “one who occupies the throne next to the throne of glory”. That he sits on a throne in the presence of God implied to many that he was virtually God’s equal.

There is also a tradition that Metatron is the prophet Enoch – from the book Major Trends in Jewish Mysticism – “This Enoch, whose flesh was turned to flame, his veins to fire, his eye-lashes to flashes of lightning, his eye-balls to flaming torches, and whom God placed on a throne next to the throne of glory, received after this heavenly transformation the name Metatron”.

What IS Metatron’s Cube ?

So now that we have explored briefly who Metatron might be – what is this diagram known as Metatrons cube, and why is it so important as to be one of the core patterns of Sacred Geometry ? I’m glad you asked…
Metatron’s Cube is obviously NOT a cube, it is a very simple and aesthetically pleasing pattern made of circles and the lines joining their centres.
It does contain the outline (projection) of 3 of the 5 Platonic solids, the Tetrahedron, the Cube, and the Icosahedron – and it comes close to displaying the remaining Dodecahedron and Icosahedron, though they are not perfect. In fact it displays 2 tetrahedrons intersecting to form the startetrahedron, 2 cubes, and 2 octahedrons.

The above info about Metatron’s Cube is widely known. But it raises some interesting questions that I have not heard answered:

  • Why is it called Metatron’s Cube when it displays many forms but is a 2 dimensional pattern of circles?
  • Why is containing the 3 dimensional Platonic Solids important
  • What is its relationship to the other famous Sacred Geometry form made of circles, the Flower of Life?
  • Why does this pattern belong to Metatron?
  • Is it relevant that Metatron is the ‘Scribe of God’?
  • What secrets are contained in this form?

A few years ago, a young friend of mine asked me to help him create a 3D model of Metatron’s Cube. So we set out to discover what this form would be, and somewhat to our surprise we settled on a figure where the spheres surrounding the central sphere create the vertexes of a cubeoctahedron within a cubeoctahedron. Since then I have validated this in many ways, the most important perhaps being that the cubeoctahedron is a unique 3D form that Buckminster Fuller named the Vector Equilibrium, and the 2D Vector Equilibrium is a hexagon as in Metatron’s Cube.
